Description: O termo fóton vem do grego phōs, que significa luz, e, portanto, é usado como sinônimo e de forma equivalente com luz. Quando os astrônomos se referem à luz, eles estão se referindo a todos os tipos de radiação eletromagnética, desde ondas de rádio até raios gama.

Um fóton é uma partícula fundamental, portadora de força eletromagnética, e é considerado o menor pacote (quanta) de energia eletromagnética. O quanta de energia associado a um fóton de determinada frequência é proporcional a essa frequência e inversamente proporcional ao seu comprimento de onda.

As visões modernas consideram um fóton como sendo não apenas uma partícula, mas também uma onda. Na astronomia, os fótons são fundamentais para nossa capacidade de observar e medir vários aspectos do universo e dos objetos que ele contém.
