Description: Abreviação de fonte de rádio quase estelar (do inglês "quasi-stellar radio source"), os quasares são fontes extragalácticas distantes. Eles aparecem como estrelas (daí o nome quase estelar) e foram inicialmente detectados com radiotelescópios. Observações revelam que eles estão associados à região ao redor dos buracos negros supermassivos mais massivos no centro das galáxias. Os quasares são uma subclasse de núcleos galácticos ativos (AGN), que inclui galáxias de rádio e Seyfert, blazares e regiões de linha de emissão nuclear de baixa ionização (LINERs). Os quasares podem ser até 100 vezes mais luminosos do que sua galáxia hospedeira. Alguns também possuem jatos gigantes que interagem com o gás ao redor e dentro de sua galáxia hospedeira. Devido à sua alta luminosidade, os quasares podem ser usados para estudar galáxias distantes, galáxias intermediárias e o meio intergaláctico. 3C 273 foi o primeiro quasar detectado.
