Description: O termo teoria na ciência tem uma definição muito específica, em contraste com a forma como é usado e percebido na vida cotidiana, onde geralmente é usado de forma intercambiável com o termo hipótese. No entanto, eles são bastante diferentes no contexto das formas científicas de construção do conhecimento. Teoria na ciência refere-se a construções matemáticas coerentes que podem ser usadas para fazer previsões, que podem então ser testadas experimentalmente por cientistas independentes. As teorias fornecem explicações bem fundamentadas dos fenômenos naturais — elas fornecem insights sobre o “porquê”.

Uma hipótese é a ideia inicial que os cientistas têm e que eles então se propõem a explorar e reunir evidências de apoio, a fim de construir modelos, teorias e leis, todos elementos essenciais para o processo científico e para a compreensão do Universo.
