Description: El término «teoría» en el ámbito científico tiene una definición muy específica, a diferencia de cómo se utiliza y se percibe en la vida cotidiana, donde suele emplearse indistintamente con el término «hipótesis». Sin embargo, ambos conceptos son bastante diferentes en el contexto de los métodos científicos de construcción del conocimiento. En ciencia, una «teoría» se refiere a construcciones matemáticas coherentes que pueden utilizarse para realizar predicciones, las cuales pueden ser posteriormente comprobadas experimentalmente por científicos independientes. Las teorías ofrecen explicaciones bien fundamentadas de los fenómenos naturales: aportan una comprensión del «por qué».

Una hipótesis es la idea inicial que tienen los científicos y que, a continuación, se proponen explorar y para la que buscan pruebas que la respalden, con el fin de construir modelos, teorías y leyes, todos ellos elementos vitales para el proceso científico y la comprensión del Universo.
