Description: As explosões de raios gama são breves rajadas de raios gama. Elas foram detetadas pela primeira vez por satélites que monitorizavam a Terra em busca de testes secretos de armas nucleares. No entanto, descobriu-se que a sua origem se encontrava no espaço profundo, para além da nossa galáxia. Acredita-se que a maioria das explosões de raios gama resulta de explosões de supernovas e algumas podem ser o resultado da fusão de duas estrelas de neutrões num sistema binário. Essas enormes explosões produzem dois jatos concentrados de matéria. Os raios gama altamente energéticos também se concentram ao longo destes jatos. Só conseguimos observar uma explosão de raios gama se, por acaso, um dos jatos estiver apontado para a Terra. Observações de contrapartes óticas e de raios X dessas explosões mostraram que elas são encontradas em outras galáxias, a maioria muito distantes da Terra.
