Talk - Safe Space: Building Educational Equity For Send Learners
Josie Rawes
University of York
Astronomy has a unique ability to inspire curiosity and wonder, yet many disabled and neurodivergent learners remain excluded from traditional outreach. Through the University of York’s Safe Space project, we have developed multisensory, learner-centred astronomy experiences for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Working with special schools and community groups, we have created accessible activities using tactile and sensory resources,, virtual reality, and flexible communication approaches. This talk will share practical examples, evaluation findings, and lessons learned from working with learners with diverse needs. We will also discuss how an STFC Public Engagement Fellowship will build on this work to develop new resources and share best practice.
