Description: Los desechos espaciales, o basura espacial, son objetos artificiales —o los restos de dichos objetos— que orbitan alrededor de la Tierra sin desempeñar ninguna función útil. Algunos ejemplos son los satélites fuera de servicio o defectuosos, los fragmentos resultantes de la colisión entre satélites, o las etapas superiores de los cohetes que se utilizaron en el lanzamiento de naves espaciales o satélites y que se desecharon tras haber cumplido su función. Cuantos más desechos espaciales haya, mayor es la probabilidad de que se produzcan colisiones dañinas, lo que supone un grave peligro para las naves espaciales. En consecuencia, las agencias espaciales están debatiendo, y han comenzado a probar, formas de eliminar los desechos espaciales, y se están esforzando por planificar misiones de modo que los objetos que han cumplido su función reentren en la atmósfera terrestre y se desintegren en ella.
