Description: La posición del Sol en el cielo se ha utilizado desde hace mucho tiempo para medir el tiempo, considerando el mediodía local como el momento en que el Sol alcanza su máxima altura sobre el horizonte, y definiendo el día, en sentido estricto, como el periodo comprendido entre el amanecer y el atardecer, y en sentido amplio, como el intervalo de tiempo que transcurre entre un mediodía local y el siguiente. Un reloj de sol es un dispositivo que proyecta la dirección del Sol sobre una superficie con marcas, normalmente siguiendo la sombra de un indicador alargado conocido como «gnomon». Cuando la sombra apunta a la marca designada como «12», por ejemplo, se lee la hora como las 12 en punto. Los relojes de sol simples solo muestran la hora solar aparente, que está directamente relacionada con la posición del Sol en el cielo. Las versiones más elaboradas cuentan con elementos que permiten determinar la hora solar media.
