Glossary term: Pianeta
Description: L'Unione Astronomica Internazionale definisce un pianeta come un corpo celeste in orbita attorno a una stella o a un resto di stella, sufficientemente grande da essere quasi rotondo per effetto della sua stessa forza di gravità, ma non abbastanza massiccio perché nel suo nucleo si verifichi una fusione termonucleare. Deve anche essere abbastanza grande perché la sua gravità elimini gli altri oggetti che passano vicino alla sua orbita intorno alla stella. Si tratta quindi di corpi freddi (rispetto alle stelle) che brillano nella banda del visibile solo grazie alla luce riflessa dalle loro stelle, ma che emettono luce nelle lunghezze d'onda dell'infrarosso. Nel nostro Sistema Solare, otto pianeti orbitano intorno al Sole. I pianeti possono essere sostanzialmente rocciosi, come i pianeti interni - Mercurio, Venere, Terra e Marte - oppure prevalentemente liquidi e gassosi con un piccolo nucleo solido, come i pianeti esterni - Giove, Saturno, Urano e Nettuno. I pianeti esterni al Sistema solare sono chiamati pianeti extrasolari, o esopianeti.
