Glossary term: Pianeti esterni
Description: Nel nostro Sistema Solare, i pianeti esterni sono Giove, Saturno, Urano e Nettuno. Le loro orbite si trovano al di fuori della fascia degli asteroidi e tutti questi pianeti sono i cosiddetti pianeti giganti, con un'atmosfera estremamente densa composta principalmente da idrogeno. Questo li distingue fisicamente dai pianeti interni, ognuno dei quali è un corpo roccioso relativamente piccolo con un'atmosfera relativamente rarefatta.
I pianeti intorno ad altre stelle diverse dal nostro Sole non rientrano necessariamente in gruppi interni ed esterni con caratteristiche simili: conosciamo un certo numero di stelle con almeno un gigante gassoso, un "Giove caldo", in orbita stretta.
