Glossary term: 명왕성

Description: 명왕성은 태양계에 있는 천체 중 하나로, 해왕성 궤도 너머의 카이퍼 벨트에 위치해 있습니다. 한때는 태양계의 아홉 번째 행성으로 알려졌지만, 2006년에 왜소행성으로 재분류되었습니다. 명왕성은 1930년 천문학자 클라이드 톰보(Clyde Tombaugh)가 발견했습니다. 명왕성이 태양으로부터 떨어진 평균 거리는 약 60억 킬로미터(km)이며, 반지름은 약 1185km로 지구의 달보다 작습니다. 명왕성의 1년은 지구의 247.9년에 해당하고, 명왕성의 하루는 지구의 약 6.4일에 해당합니다.

NASA의 뉴호라이즌(New Horizons) 탐사선은 2015년에 명왕성을 근접 비행한 첫 번째 우주선으로, 명왕성의 표면과 대기를 처음으로 자세히 관찰했습니다. 명왕성의 표면은 매우 차가워서 수소가 기체 형태로 존재하기 어렵습니다. 명왕성의 희박한 대기는 주로 질소로 이루어져 있으며, 표면에는 얼어붙은 질소로 된 넓은 평원이 있습니다. 명왕성의 대기는 표면에서 약 1600km 높이까지 퍼져 있습니다. 명왕성은 암석(약 70%)과 얼음(약 30%)으로 구성되어 있습니다. 또한 명왕성에는 다섯 개의 위성이 있습니다: 카론(Charon), 스틱스(Styx), 닉스(Nix), 케르베로스(Kerberos), 히드라(Hydra).

Caption: NASA's New Horizons spacecraft captured this high-resolution enhanced colour view of the dwarf planet Pluto on in July 2015. The image combines blue, red and infrared images taken by the Ralph/Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera (MVIC). Pluto’s surface appears enhanced in this view to a rainbow of pale blues, yellows, oranges, and deep reds. The image resolves details and colours on scales as small as 1.3 kilometers.
