Glossary term: Plutone
Description: Plutone è uno dei corpi celesti del nostro Sistema Solare. Si trova nella Fascia di Kuiper, oltre l'orbita di Nettuno. In passato era conosciuto come il nono pianeta del Sistema solare, ma nel 2006 è stato riclassificato come pianeta nano. È stato scoperto nel 1930 da Clyde Tombaugh. La distanza media di Plutone dal Sole è di 6 miliardi di chilometri (km) e il suo raggio è di 1185 km (più piccolo della luna della Terra). Un anno su Plutone equivale a 247,9 anni terrestri e il suo giorno equivale a 6,4 giorni terrestri.
La missione New Horizon della NASA è stata la prima sonda a volare vicino a Plutone, nel 2015, e ha fornito la prima visione dettagliata della superficie del pianeta e della sua atmosfera. La superficie di Plutone è così fredda che pochissimo idrogeno può esistere in forma gassosa. La poca atmosfera di Plutone è costituita principalmente da azoto, e la sua superficie presenta ampie pianure di azoto congelato. La sua atmosfera si estende fino a una distanza di 1600 km. Plutone è composto da rocce (70%) e ghiaccio (30%). Ha cinque lune conosciute: Caronte, Stige, Nix, Kerberos e Idra.
