Description: As três leis formuladas por Johannes Kepler no início dos anos 1600 foram as primeiras a descrever as órbitas dos planetas como não sendo perfeitamente circulares. A primeira lei afirma que os planetas orbitam o Sol em trajetórias elípticas, com o Sol em um dos focos da elipse. A segunda lei diz que a área varrida por uma linha entre o planeta e o Sol é a mesma em intervalos de tempo iguais ao longo da órbita. De acordo com a terceira lei, o quadrado do tempo (T²) que um planeta leva para se mover ao redor do Sol é proporcional ao cubo de seu semieixo maior (a³, sendo o semieixo maior uma medida que caracteriza o tamanho da órbita do planeta ao redor do Sol). Kepler descobriu essas três leis estudando as observações de Marte realizadas por seu mentor Tycho Brahe. Ele utilizou essas leis para fazer os cálculos mais precisos das órbitas dos planetas conhecidos em sua época.
