Caption:
This series of images shows the orbital motion of the extrasolar planet (exoplanet) beta Pictoris b. The planet is the bright dot in each image. The planet's host star is hidden behind the black circle in the middle of each image. This is done to remove the much brighter host star which would otherwise drown out the light from the planet. The planet's orbit is viewed edge-on. Seeing the orbit from this perspective makes it look like the planet moves along a straight line.
Between February 2015 and November 2016 beta Pictoris b appears to move closer and closer to its host star. The planet then moved so close to the star that it was not seen for almost two years, after which it reappeared on the other side of the star.

Caption: Questa serie di immagini mostra il moto orbitale del pianeta extrasolare (esopianeta) beta Pictoris b. Il pianeta è il punto luminoso in ogni immagine. La stella ospite del pianeta è nascosta dietro il cerchio nero al centro di ogni immagine. Ciò è stato fatto per eliminare la stella ospite, molto più luminosa, che altrimenti avrebbe oscurato la luce del pianeta. L'orbita del pianeta è vista di profilo. Vedendo l'orbita da questa prospettiva sembra che il pianeta si muova lungo una linea retta.
Nel periodo da febbraio 2015 a novembre 2016 beta Pictoris b sembra avvicinarsi sempre più alla sua stella ospite. Il pianeta si è poi avvicinato così tanto alla stella che non è stato visto per quasi due anni, dopodiché è riapparso dall'altra parte della stella.
