Description: Un sistema planetario es un sistema en el que uno o más planetas orbitan alrededor de una o más estrellas, enanas marrones y/o remanentes estelares. Nuestro Sistema Solar es un sistema planetario con el Sol en su centro. En las últimas décadas se han descubierto miles de sistemas planetarios alrededor de estrellas distintas al Sol. Se conocen algunos casos en los que el objeto central de un sistema planetario es una enana marrón o un remanente estelar, como una estrella de neutrones o una enana blanca.

También se pueden encontrar sistemas planetarios alrededor de componentes de sistemas estelares múltiples, como el planeta que orbita alrededor de Próxima Centauri, la estrella más cercana al Sol y miembro de un sistema estelar triple. También hay un puñado de planetas circumbinarios, que orbitan alrededor de ambas estrellas de un sistema estelar binario.

La escala de los sistemas planetarios varía enormemente, ya que algunos planetas orbitan a solo unos pocos radios estelares de su estrella anfitriona, mientras que otros tienen órbitas de miles de unidades astronómicas (donde una unidad astronómica corresponde a la distancia media entre la Tierra y el Sol).
