Description: Um sistema planetário é um sistema em que um ou mais planetas orbitam uma ou mais estrelas, anãs marrons e/ou remanescentes estelares. Nosso Sistema Solar é um sistema planetário com o Sol em seu centro. Nas últimas décadas, milhares de sistemas planetários foram descobertos em torno de outras estrelas que não o Sol. São conhecidos alguns casos em que o objeto central de um sistema planetário é uma anã marrom ou um remanescente estelar, como uma estrela de nêutrons ou uma anã branca.

Os sistemas planetários também podem ser encontrados em torno de componentes de vários sistemas estelares, como o planeta que orbita Proxima Centauri, a estrela mais próxima do Sol e membro de um sistema estelar triplo. Há também alguns planetas circumbinários, que orbitam ambas as estrelas de um sistema estelar binário.

A escala dos sistemas planetários varia muito, com alguns planetas orbitando a apenas alguns raios estelares de sua estrela hospedeira, enquanto outros têm órbitas de milhares de unidades astronômicas (onde uma unidade astronômica corresponde à distância média da Terra ao Sol).
