Description: De nombreux processus en astronomie sont périodiques : ils se répètent régulièrement. L'orbite d'une planète autour du Soleil en est un exemple : la planète tourne autour du Soleil en suivant toujours la même trajectoire. Le temps qui s'écoule entre deux répétitions d'un tel cycle s'appelle la période du cycle. La période orbitale d'une planète, par exemple, est le temps qu'il faut à la planète pour faire une fois le tour du Soleil. La répétition ne doit pas nécessairement être parfaite, et les périodes orbitales peuvent changer lentement au fil du temps. Par exemple, la légère diminution systématique de la période de la première étoile binaire à neutrons a fourni la première preuve indirecte de l'émission d'ondes gravitationnelles.
