Während Staub in der Ebene der Milchstraße das sichtbare Licht blockiert und so das Zentrum unserer Galaxie verdeckt, durchdringt Infrarotlicht diesen Staub. Das auffälligste Merkmal ist das breite, helle Band, das horizontal durch die Bildmitte verläuft: dies ist die Ebene unserer Milchstraße. Oberhalb und unterhalb des Bandes sind zahlreiche hellere Knoten und Flecken zu sehen, die Gebiete aktiver Sternentstehung und nahegelegene Galaxien kennzeichnen.

Ein solcher Datensatz ist ein klassisches Beispiel für eine astronomische Durchmusterung, bei der große Teile des Himmels abgetastet werden, um einen umfassenden Katalog kosmischer Quellen zu erstellen. Der WISE-Satellit war im Weltraum im Einsatz, wodurch er Teile des Infrarotspektrums untersuchen konnte, die sonst von der Erdatmosphäre blockiert werden.

Légende d'image : This image presents the entire sky mapped in infrared light from space by the WISE satellite. While dust in the plane of the Milky Way blocks visible light, obscuring the heart of our Galaxy, infrared light passes through the dust. The most prominent feature is the broad, bright band running horizontally through the centre — this is the plane of our Milky Way galaxy. Numerous brighter knots and patches appear above and below the band, marking regions of active star formation and nearby galaxies.

Such a dataset is a classic example of an astronomical survey, in which large portions of the sky is scanned to build a comprehensive catalogue of cosmic sources. The WISE satellite operated in space, allowing it to study parts of the infrared spectrum blocked by Earth's atmosphere.

La caratteristica più evidente è l’ampia fascia luminosa che attraversa orizzontalmente il centro: si tratta del piano della nostra galassia, la Via Lattea. Numerosi nodi e macchie più brillanti compaiono sopra e sotto la fascia, indicando regioni di formazione stellare attiva e galassie vicine.

Un dataset di questo tipo è un classico esempio di rilevamento astronomico, in cui ampie porzioni di cielo vengono scansionate per costruire un catalogo completo delle sorgenti cosmiche. Il satellite WISE ha operato nello spazio, il che gli ha permesso di studiare parti dello spettro infrarosso bloccate dall’atmosfera terrestre.
