Glossary term: Astronomia all'infrarosso
Description: L'astronomia a infrarossi è una branca dell'astronomia che osserva la luce infrarossa. È più sensibile agli oggetti freddi rispetto alle osservazioni in luce visibile e permette di osservare galassie molto distanti la cui luce è molto spostata verso il rosso. Le osservazioni all'infrarosso sono meno influenzate dall'assorbimento e possono quindi vedere più in profondità nelle nubi interstellari di gas e polvere.
Le molecole dell'atmosfera terrestre assorbono gran parte della luce infrarossa proveniente dallo spazio e quindi l'astronomia a infrarossi a terra si svolge principalmente in intervalli di lunghezze d'onda in cui l'assorbimento è minore. Sia la Terra che la sua atmosfera irradiano nell'infrarosso, quindi sono necessarie tecniche speciali per rimuovere questa radiazione di fondo. Per le radiazioni infrarosse con lunghezze d'onda maggiori, questo fondo più l'assorbimento atmosferico rendono quasi impossibile l'osservazione a terra. Di conseguenza, molte osservazioni nell'infrarosso vengono effettuate con telescopi spaziali. Tuttavia, per le lunghezze d'onda più lunghe dell'infrarosso sono possibili osservazioni a terra da siti molto secchi. Questa è tipicamente chiamata astronomia submillimetrica.
