Glossary term: Cometa
Description: Una cometa è un piccolo oggetto del Sistema Solare costituito da un nucleo composto da una miscela di diversi tipi di ghiaccio e materiale roccioso e polveroso, una palla di neve sporca. Le dimensioni dei nuclei delle comete vanno da poche centinaia di metri a decine di chilometri. La maggior parte delle comete ha orbite molto ellittiche. Quando la cometa si avvicina al Sole, parte del ghiaccio superficiale evapora e viene spazzato via dal vento solare per formare la caratteristica chioma e la coda. Le comete sono visibili grazie alla luce solare che si riflette sulla chioma, sulla coda o (per le comete lontane dal Sole) sul nucleo. Le comete sono classificate come "periodiche" o "a breve periodo" se il loro passaggio è stato osservato più di una volta, o se il loro periodo è notoriamente inferiore a 200 anni, oppure "non periodiche".
