Description: 태양과 행성 외에도 태양계에는 소행성과 혜성을 비롯해 수많은 작은 천체들이 존재합니다. 이런 천체가 지구와 충돌하면 재앙적인 결과를 초래할 수 있습니다. 지금까지 알려진 소행성 중 실제로 지구와 충돌할 가능성이 있는 것은 없지만, 주의 깊게 관찰해야 할 천체들은 여전히 많이 있습니다. 지구근접천체(NEO)는 지구-태양 거리의 1.3배(1.3천문단위)보다 태양에 가까이 접근하는 소행성이나 혜성을 말합니다. 대부분의 NEO는 지구근접소행성(NEA)입니다.

이 중에서도 지구에 실제로 위험을 줄 가능성이 있는 천체를 잠재적위험천체(PHO)라고 부릅니다. PHO가 되려면 두 가지 조건을 만족해야 합니다. 첫째, 지구 궤도에 0.05천문단위(지구-태양 거리의 5%) 이내로 접근해야 합니다. 둘째, 충돌 시 영향을 줄 만큼 충분히 커야 합니다. 작은 천체는 대기권에서 타버려 피해를 주지 않기 때문입니다. 태양계의 작은 천체는 크기를 직접 측정하기 어렵기 때문에, 천문학자들은 대신 절대등급(absolute magnitude)이라는 밝기 기준을 사용합니다. 천체가 클수록 더 많은 빛을 반사해 밝게 보이는 경향이 있습니다. 절대등급이 22.0 이하(숫자가 작을수록 밝음)인 천체는 PHO로 분류됩니다. 대부분의 PHO는 잠재적위험소행성(PHA)입니다.
