Description: O hidrogênio é o elemento mais abundante e mais leve do Universo; possui a menor carga nuclear, pois tem apenas um próton. Quando os átomos de hidrogênio são excitados, por exemplo, pela radiação de uma estrela quente próxima, eles emitem luz em regiões estreitas e características do espectro. Essas linhas de emissão de hidrogênio podem ser usadas para detectar hidrogênio atômico: em particular, a linha alfa do hidrogênio, com sua intensa cor vermelha que faz com que as nuvens de hidrogênio apareçam em um vermelho esplêndido nas imagens astronômicas, e a linha de hidrogênio de 21 centímetros (cm), que pode ser usada para mapear grandes nuvens de gás usando radiotelescópios.
