Description: El hidrógeno es el elemento más abundante y más ligero del Universo; tiene la carga nuclear más pequeña, ya que solo cuenta con un protón. Cuando los átomos de hidrógeno se excitan, por ejemplo, por la radiación de una estrella caliente cercana, emiten luz en regiones estrechas y características del espectro. Estas líneas de emisión de hidrógeno pueden utilizarse para detectar hidrógeno atómico: en particular, la línea alfa del hidrógeno, con su intenso color rojo que hace que las nubes de hidrógeno aparezcan en un espléndido rojo en las imágenes astronómicas, y la línea de hidrógeno de 21 centímetros (cm), que puede utilizarse para cartografiar grandes nubes de gas mediante radiotelescopios.
