Electric charges, such as the positive charge (on the left) and negative charge (on the right) shown here, create an electric field around them. Parts of the field are shown in this image as field lines: lines that begin or end at one of the charges. These lines are directed, as indicated by the arrows along each line. Place a positively-charged test particle on one of the lines, and it will feel an acceleration in the direction of the line. A negatively-changed particle will feel an acceleration in the opposite direction to the direction of the line.

Image caption: Elektrische Ladungen, wie die hier gezeigten positiven (links) und negativen (rechts) Ladungen, erzeugen ein elektrisches Feld um sie herum. Teile des Feldes sind in diesem Bild als Feldlinien dargestellt: Linien, die an einer der Ladungen beginnen oder enden. Diese Linien sind gerichtet, wie durch die Pfeile entlang jeder Linie angezeigt wird. Legt man ein positiv geladenes Testteilchen auf eine der Linien, so spürt es eine Beschleunigung in Richtung der Linie. Ein negativ geladenes Teilchen spürt eine Beschleunigung in die entgegengesetzte Richtung zur Richtung der Linie.

Image caption: Le cariche elettriche, come la carica positiva (a sinistra) e la carica negativa (a destra) qui raffigurate, creano un campo elettrico intorno a loro. Parti del campo sono mostrate in questa immagine come linee di campo: linee che iniziano o terminano in corrispondenza di una delle cariche. Queste linee sono dirette, come indicato dalle frecce lungo ogni linea. Posizionando una particella di prova a carica positiva su una delle linee, si percepirà un'accelerazione nella direzione della linea. Una particella con carica negativa sentirà un'accelerazione nella direzione opposta a quella della linea.
