Description: O halo galáctico é uma distribuição aproximadamente esférica de estrelas, gás e matéria escura que se estende acima, abaixo e além do disco da Via Láctea. As estrelas no halo são mais velhas e têm um teor de metal mais baixo do que a maioria das estrelas no disco da Via Láctea. Na região ao redor do Sol, apenas uma baixa porcentagem das estrelas são localizadas no halo. Os aglomerados globulares de estrelas também são encontrados no halo galáctico.

Um halo invisível de matéria escura também se estende através e ao redor da Via Láctea, contendo a maior parte da massa da galáxia.

A maioria das outras galáxias também tem halo.
