Description: Um telescópio refrator é um telescópio que usa uma lente como seu principal elemento de coleta de luz. É o contrário de um telescópio refletor, que usa um espelho para essa função. Os telescópios refratores ainda são comuns como telescópios amadores, onde uma combinação especial de lentes que corrigem os efeitos de cores indesejadas ("telescópios acromáticos") pode produzir excelente qualidade de imagem para observação visual e astrofotografia. Na astronomia profissional, os telescópios refratores foram amplamente substituídos pelos telescópios de espelho a partir do início dos anos 1900. Os astrônomos queriam aberturas (diâmetros de lentes ou espelhos) cada vez maiores, e é difícil fabricar telescópios refratores com lentes de mais de um metro, pois a lente é apoiada apenas na borda, o que faz com que o centro pesado da lente caia com a gravidade, distorcendo a forma e as propriedades ópticas da lente.
