Description: Un telescopio refractor es aquel que utiliza una lente como principal elemento de captación de luz. Esto contrasta con el telescopio reflector, que emplea un espejo para desempeñar esa función. Los telescopios refractores siguen siendo habituales entre los aficionados, donde una combinación especial de lentes que corrige los efectos cromáticos no deseados («telescopios acromáticos») puede producir una excelente calidad de imagen tanto para la observación visual como para la astrofotografía. En la astronomía profesional, los telescopios refractores fueron sustituidos en gran medida por los telescopios reflectores a partir de principios del siglo XX. Los astrónomos buscaban aperturas cada vez mayores (diámetros de lente o espejo), y resulta difícil fabricar telescopios refractores con lentes de más de un metro de diámetro, ya que la lente solo se sostiene por el borde, lo que hace que el pesado centro de la lente se combe bajo la gravedad, distorsionando su forma y sus propiedades ópticas.
