Description: Em termos simples, as estrelas são bolas de gás (ou melhor: plasma), mantidas juntas por sua própria gravidade e impedidas de entrar em colapso por sua pressão interna. Os modelos de estrutura estelar descrevem os detalhes de como as condições no núcleo de uma estrela levam a diferentes tipos de reações de fusão nuclear; como a energia liberada nessas reações é transportada para fora por radiação, condução ou convecção; e como é mantido o equilíbrio entre a gravidade e a pressão nos diferentes segmentos da estrela. Dessa forma, os modelos de estrutura estelar também relacionam a massa, a luminosidade, a composição e o tempo de vida esperado de uma estrela. Eles também descrevem a função da rotação estelar, a evolução estelar (como as estrelas mudam ao longo do tempo) e a física dos remanescentes estelares.
