Description: Uma vela padrão é um objeto astronômico cuja luminosidade (energia emitida por unidade de tempo) é conhecida e pode ser usada para estimar a distância do objeto até a Terra.

Para a maioria dos objetos celestes, os astrônomos não têm informações sobre sua distância da Terra. Nessas circunstâncias, pode ser difícil determinar se se estamos observando um objeto distante, mas muito brilhante, ou para um objeto mais próximo e menos brilhante — o brilho aparente, medido a partir da Terra, pode ser o mesmo em ambos os casos. As velas padrão têm luminosidades que podem ser estimadas sem conhecer sua distância. A distância da vela padrão pode então ser calculada comparando essa luminosidade com o brilho aparente do objeto no céu noturno. Exemplos importantes incluem variáveis Cefeidas (estrelas pulsantes onde há uma relação entre o período de pulsação e a luminosidade) e as supernovas do tipo Ia (explosões estelares brilhantes existe uma relação entre a luminosidade máxima e a escala de tempo em que o brilho diminui logo após a explosão).
