Description: Um dos principais fundamentos da compreensão do Universo é determinar as distâncias de vários objetos e fenômenos. A compreensão das distâncias permite que os cientistas não apenas mapeiem o Universo observável, mas também entendam as propriedades físicas de vários objetos e fenômenos. A escala de distâncias, muitas vezes chamada de escala de distâncias cósmicas, é uma estrutura que fornece uma visão geral das várias técnicas usadas para medir distâncias em uma série de escalas. Assim como os degraus de uma escada, cada degrau (técnica de medição) da escala de distância é calibrado com base no degrau anterior. A escala começa com técnicas de medição que podem ser usadas para objetos mais próximos (por exemplo, paralaxe), e cada degrau seguinte permite que os cientistas meçam objetos mais distantes (por exemplo, supernovas tipo Ia, redshift).
