Description: Una enana roja es una estrella pequeña y de baja masa con una temperatura efectiva inferior a 3900 kelvin (K) (~3600 grados Celsius (°C)). A simple vista, estas estrellas parecerían más rojas que las estrellas amarillas similares al Sol, pero no hay enanas rojas visibles a simple vista. Las estrellas con masas comprendidas entre aproximadamente el 8 % y el 50 % de la masa del Sol pasan la mayor parte de su vida como enanas rojas. Estas estrellas fusionan hidrógeno a un ritmo mucho más lento que las estrellas como el Sol y, por lo tanto, son más tenues, pero pueden mantener la fusión de hidrógeno durante mucho más tiempo. Muchas enanas rojas tienen campos magnéticos muy intensos, lo que da lugar a más tormentas magnéticas y a un mayor número de manchas estelares que en estrellas como el Sol. La mayoría de las estrellas de la Vía Láctea son enanas rojas, al igual que la mayoría de las estrellas situadas a menos de 10 parsecs del Sol.
