Dieses Aussehen wird durch die dünne, fast randständige Scheibe hervorgerufen, die von der dominanten Rundung beleuchtet wird. Sowohl die Scheibe als auch die Rundung enthalten Sterne, aber die Sterne in der Rundung sind tendenziell älter, während die Scheibe auch große Mengen an Staub und Gas beherberg die Schatten verursachen. M 104 befindet sich im Sternbild Jungfrau in etwa 50 Lichtjahren Entfernung.
