Glossary term: Protoétoile

Description: Une protoétoile est un stade précoce du processus de formation des étoiles. Il s'agit d'une grande masse de gaz et de poussière formée par la contraction d'un nuage moléculaire géant dans le milieu interstellaire. Lors de l'effondrement du nuage, l'énergie gravitationnelle est convertie en chaleur, ce qui réchauffe la protoétoile encore en formation. Cette phase peut durer de 105 à 107 ans, selon la masse de l'étoile, les étoiles plus massives se formant plus rapidement. Elle commence par une augmentation de la densité au cœur du nuage moléculaire et se termine par la formation d'une étoile de la séquence principale. Les étoiles de la pré-séquence principale de masse similaire à celle du Soleil sont connues sous le nom d'étoiles T-Tauri. Une fois que la fusion de l'hydrogène s'amorce au cœur d'une étoile, celle-ci commence à produire de l'énergie et devient une étoile de la séquence principale.

Witnessing the birth of a star

Caption: A combination of radio and visible light imaged with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and European Southern Observatory's New Technology Telescope (NTT) revealing birth of a star forming the Herbig-Haro object HH 46/47.
