Glossary term: Protostella
Description: Una protostella è uno stadio iniziale del processo di formazione stellare. Si tratta di una grande massa di gas e polvere formatasi in seguito alla contrazione di una nube molecolare gigante nel mezzo interstellare. Quando la nube collassa, l'energia gravitazionale viene convertita in calore, riscaldando la protostella ancora in formazione. Questa fase può durare da 105 a 107 anni, a seconda della massa della stella: le stelle più massicce si formano più rapidamente. Inizia con un aumento della densità nel nucleo della nube molecolare e termina con la formazione di una stella pre-sequenza principale. Le stelle di pre-sequenza principale di massa simile a quella del Sole sono note come stelle T Tauri. Una volta che la fusione dell'idrogeno si avvia nel nucleo di una stella, quest'ultima inizia a produrre energia e diventa una stella di sequenza principale.
