Glossary term: Osservatorio
Description: Un osservatorio è un sito o un edificio dedicato alle osservazioni astronomiche. Le osservazioni ottiche e all'infrarosso vengono solitamente effettuate con telescopi collocati in cupole. Gli osservatori astronomici moderni, che si trovano sulla superficie terrestre, ottici, infrarossi o submillimetrici, sono eretti sulle cime delle montagne, quanto più possibile al di sopra dell'atmosfera terrestre, se si tratta di osservatori che dispongono di strumenti specializzati come telescopi, telecamere e spettrografi. Una posizione elevata è meno necessaria per gli osservatori astronomici di emissioni radio e raggi cosmici. Altre parti dello spettro elettromagnetico (raggi gamma, raggi X, radiazioni ultraviolette e radiazioni infrarosse a lunghezza d'onda maggiore) possono essere studiate con telescopi spaziali specifici, a volte indicati anche come osservatori.
